Thurgood Marshall: In 1954, this lawyer and civil rights activist successfully argued Brown v. Board of Education before the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1967, he became the Court’s first Black justice. Miriam Makeba: Known as Mama Africa, this award-winning singer, songwriter and activist was exiled for 30 years because of her outspoken opposition to South Africa’s apartheid regime. Olaudah Equiano: After buying his freedom from slavery, he became Britain’s first Black civil servant, working to resettle former slaves. He also wrote a compelling autobiography and organized the abolitionist Sons of Africa in London. Yaa Asantewaa: This Ashanti (Ghana) Queen Mother is known for leading the War of the Golden Stool against British Colonialism in 1900.
