He decided to launch the development of a compact car for the Brazilian market, to replace the Fusca (Beetle). Production of the Brasilia began in 1973. The five-door model, however, was less successful than the three-door. The latter benefited from lower taxes, as it was sold as a light commercial vehicle. The chassis of the Brasilia is the same as that of the Beetle. The engine is also derived from the Beetle. It is a 4-cylinder flat engine with a single carburetor, mounted at the rear of the vehicle. From 1974, the Brasilia was offered with a second carburetor. In the 1980s, an ethanol-powered model was introduced. A total of 931,204 Brasilias were sold in Brazil, and 133,212 were exported (mainly to Latin America and Portugal)2.
